Varun’s early life was marked by a blend of cultures and languages. His father, Vinod Chakravarthy, is an ITS officer for BSNL and is of half-Tamil and half-Malayali descent, while his mother, Malini Chakravarthy, is a Kannadiga. Varun was raised in Adyar, Chennai, where he attended Kendriya Vidyalaya CLRI and later St. Patrick’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School. During his school years, Varun played cricket as a wicket-keeper but eventually quit the sport to focus on academics. He went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree in architecture from SRM University.

At the age of 25, Varun made a life-changing decision to leave his job as an architect and pursue cricket professionally. Initially starting as a pace bowler, a knee injury in early 2017 kept him out of action for six months. During his recovery, Varun transitioned to spin bowling, a move that would define his career. He began playing for the CromBest Cricket Club as a medium pace bowler but later switched to spin bowling after his injury. His comeback as a spinner saw him playing for the Jubilee Cricket Club in the fourth division.

Varun’s breakthrough came in 2018 when he played for the Siechem Madurai Panthers in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). He took nine wickets in 10 matches and delivered 125 dot balls out of the 240 balls he bowled, showcasing his potential as a spinner. His impressive performance in the TNPL earned him a spot in the Tamil Nadu team for the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Varun made his List A debut against Gujarat at Chennai in the tournament and emerged as the leading wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu, with 22 dismissals in nine matches at an economy rate of 4.23.

In the 2020 IPL auction, Varun was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
